Israel- A Personal Essay

******************Essay I needed to write for Governor's School. I actually ended up quite liking it. Lemme know what you think!************************

The idea of a homeland for the Jewish people has influenced me profoundly. Israel came about in a macabre way, taking the blood of six million Jews to sign its declaration, and 20,093 more to keep it alive. Yet the nation still stands. What it has had to do to survive is more drastic than any nation still in existence today and Israel is a mere 62 years old. But its existence has forced me to think. It has created a dynamic tension within me, being Jewish, as I try to reconcile my views of what a Jewish nation should do and the facts of what it has done.
Over the span of its existence, Israel has been involved in seven wars and is constantly in the news for its skirmishes with Palestine. When I hear nothing but bad things about Israel from all sides; TV newscasters, newspapers, acquaintances and opponents of my homeland, it forces me to research. As Israel is my homeland, it is an extension of me, and I have a knee-jerk reaction to defend it, no matter what they’ve done. But when I hear that the Israeli army bulldozed an entire refugee camp, I begin to wonder. I have to think, “Do I still support what they’re doing? Can I defend a country when I don’t agree with their military policies?” and I have to search for both sides of the story, and I have to search for objectivity within myself.
I cannot afford, as a modern Jewish teenager, to look at Israel through an emotion-tinted glass, and yet, as a modern Jewish teenager, I cannot help but to be emotionally involved. I am grilled more than any other person that I know about my views on Israel, simply because it as seen as an extension of the Jewish people, and in a way they are right. I feel that our homeland should create policies and employ military tactics and engage in foreign relations all in line with Jewish principles. When it seems to me that they do not do so, I get conflicted. Why have a Jewish homeland when it will not act in accordance with what is best for its people and the people around it? What should Judaism say on the matter? Are they in the right or wrong? Is there a gray area? All these questions swirl around my mind, and when I dig deeper, all I find are harder questions. In questioning Israel’s policies, I am questioning my faith. In one breath, the Torah says “Thou shall not kill”, and in the very next it instructs us to wipe out every inhabitant of the land that opposes us. As I wrestle with these questions, I realize that my faith is just as conflicted as I am, and that there are no answers; only better questions.
The idea of a Jewish homeland has affected me on many levels, from my daily conversations, to my thoughts before I go to bed, to a continuing inner monologue pondering the facets of right and wrong and self defense and slaughter. It has taught me to think critically, even when my heart screams to do otherwise. But most of all, the idea of a Jewish homeland has forced me to question, and I think that is the best thing that we can ever hope to ask of an idea.

A Model

Katrina stepped out of the shower with a towel wound tightly around her form. She took her time drying each and every droplet from her flawless skin. She surveyed herself in the mirror, and took in each detail with beautiful amber eyes. Her skin was the color of freshly made coffee, with just a dollop of milk mixed in. Her high cheekbones and wide-set, large eyes cast an aura of mystique around her willowy figure. With onyx hair hanging to just below her chin, she was beautiful.
With cat-like grace, she turned from the mirror to sit on the edge of her bathtub, her long legs folding into her body with ease. She rested her cheek on her knees, her arms hugging her legs into a tight bundle.
Katrina sat this way for a while, staring at the skylight that cut a hole in her vaulted ceiling, watching light flood the luxurious bathroom as the shadows crept further and further away from her curled body.
Her phone buzzed on the vanity, and she was startled back to reality. She slowly uncurled and stood up, allowing the towel to drop as she walked over to check her phone. A text message from her agent. Of course. Today’s a big day! Don’t forget, you need to be at the plaza by eleven. Bring those gold shoes of yours, the strappy ones, not the heels. –Samantha.
Katrina closed her eyes and delicately trailed her fingertips across her face. She snapped her phone shut and leaned against the vanity, staring at her feet.
Her hand shot out and closed around the bottle of vanilla scented lotion to her left, and she delicately unscrewed the top and dribbled the lotion into her palm. She turned her attention to her right leg first. Slowly she ran her lithe fingers down her perfectly sculpted thigh, rubbing in the balm as she went. “I hate you” she whispered. Her fingers trailed down to trace her calf. “I hate you, too.”
Her hand moved over to her left thigh, and repeated the process. “Why can’t you be thinner?” she said to her flawless skin as it absorbed the last of the lotion. She poured some more into her hands, and slowly worked her way up her stomach. “I hate you”. Katrina reached her left shoulder and paused, her hand cupped gently around her smooth skin. She closed her eyes and tilted her head until it rested lightly on her cupped hand. She envisioned herself shrinking smaller and smaller until she could run on nothing but air and the sunlight streaming in from the skylight in her vaulted bathroom ceiling.  She curled in on herself further, and continued her hand’s journey down her sapling arm.  “Be smaller” she whispered to her shoulder.
Katrina finished applying the lotion and stepped into her carefully pressed clothes, tightening her artfully crafted belt to the last hole. As she walked out the door, she glanced once again at the full-length mirror glinting in the sunlight from the skylight in her vaulted bathroom ceiling.
Without a word, she smashed it and stepped out the door.

Interesting.

This may offend you.

http://www.aolnews.com/science/article/study-gay-parents-more-likely-to-have-gay-kids/19668089?ncid=webmail

Personally, I find it interesting.

A lot of people violently oppose gay marriage, stating in their arguments that gay parents will turn out gay kids. Before now, this statement has been shot down almost as soon as the words exited their mouth. But with this study (and yes, it has been extensively researched, read the article), that may no longer be a lie.

Personally, I'm fine with the idea that gay parents can produce more gay kids. It makes sense if you think about it; the idea isn't condemned in their household, and they are inherently more open-minded. You would have NO trouble coming out to gay parents, whereas if you live in a household where you're not sure how your parents would take it, or if they would vehemently object, you may never come out.

I don't think that gay and lesbian couples produce more homosexual children, only that they allow their kids to be who they are without fear.

Leave your comments and opinions below, I'd love to discuss this more.

Poetry Post #3 Seeing is a Lost Art Form

We are all blind.

You can watch
the lovers at the park
on an unusually chill
winter's day
from noon until sunset,
and never see them at all.

I observe;

They walk side by side
his footprints unusually deep
in the ever-present snow,
hers barely there,
begging a breeze
blow me away

She turns,
and seems to search his eyes.

I think to myself
I have seen this.
She will  tell him
'I love you'

Her mouth opens,
the truth clings
to the safety of her lips,
even as her tongue
harshly throws them out into
the swirling abyss.

Her eyes are as cold as the snow in her hair
as she spins on her heel.

He grabs her retreating arm,
sweeps her back into his pleading stare
as words tumble
meaninglessly
never reaching her ears.
I love you
they say
I can change

But she is already gone.

Her arm,
clad in a black wool,
jerks out of his pleading grip.

She runs.
Past the bench,
past the pond,
past hope,
past sight.

He merely stands,
another tree in the landscape
eaten from the inside out
by some awful blight
that has left merely a shell.

...

I watch this with a knowing eye
and a calm demeanor.
I know what he will do next;
I have been the boy
I have been the girl

He will walk home
find solace at the bottom of a box of cheap wine
and move on.

She will throw herself into work.
Sleep won't cross her mind for several days.
She will tell herself it was for the best

...
....
...

I am awakened from my delusion
as I see him calmly turn
and put a foot on the unstable ice
caking the small pond
directly alongside his love's sole set of footprints

I begin to say something
when there is a crack
as sure as a gunshot
and just as deadly

He falls

...

The next day in the paper
their obituaries are side by side.
Lovers reunited.

Letters I Wish I Could Send

Letters I wish I could send

Dear X,
Fuck you. What happened? We were friends. But I was the only one putting anything into our friendship. You never cared that you were interrupting my family time, you brushed off my concerns like they were nothing, you used me like I was a puppy who would listen and listen and give you endless love, but you never fed me or gave me rest. I wasted several months putting your concerns far ahead of my own, and my life spiraled thanks to that. I haven't been the same since. Oh, and here's the kicker; when I needed you most, you acted like it was nothing, and returned to your car ads. I don't believe you when you say you actually worried, you want to know why? Because I don't think you cared from the start.
-Nobody

Dear D,
I don't know why I talked to you at the start. I didn't know you, I had only seen you perform. You ended up being rather nice at the beginning. I beat myself up over saying stupid things, but then you commented here and there and I thought all was well. I really admire your eloquence on Facebook, and wish I could hear some of the songs you write. Nobody else seems to understand that I don't like you in a crush sort of way, rather I think you're interesting and I'd like to be friends. "Here's a trailer for anyone who can't comprehend research". It still hurts. Well, I tried.
-Nobody

Dear M,
Wow. You don't seem to fathom the fact that anyone could actually dislike you. Well, newsflash Pompous, I do. I used to like you, you are a very talented boy indeed, but you never let up on the asshole meter. Oh, and then I found out you KNEW? Way to lead me on jerk. I'm SO glad you went to college far away from me. I just hope you don't keep popping up in real life like you do in my mind.
-Nobody

Dear *,
I worry about you. When you went a-woll, I freaked out. I couldn't deal with another friend leaving with no explanation. But you're back now, and I'm glad. I'm just scared about what happened in between.
-Nobody

Dear L,
Please, please, please hold up for a minute. Take a second and look back to the fifth grade you that I met. Would he like what you were doing now? Would he wonder why you've gone through so many 'relationships' so fast? You're heartbroken, admit it. Everyone sees it but you. Please, when we try to talk to you about this, it isn't because we're trying to attack you. It's because we're worried about you. We've seen a huge change, and it HASN'T been for the better. We want our pillar back. We want the happy you back.
-Nobody

Dear ~,
He's not worth it. I don't know what you've been through in the past, you won't tell me, but I can tell it's bad. Now he came along and I'm sure he wasn't the greatest person seeing as how he made you so unhappy, so why do you still care what he thinks? You were almost ENGAGED to another guy in the time you've broken up with him (which was over two years ago, might I add), so why is he still important? Please try to forget about whatever he said. He's not worth it.
<3
-Nobody

Dear * and ~,
Cut back on the guys, you're just like L. I'm worried that you're burning through relationships at an unhealthy rate. I don't want to see you hurt.
-Nobody

Dear N,
I despise you. You're ugly, fat, inconsiderate, abrasive, unmotivated, and just downright mean. Why can't you keep a goal? It's not that hard, people do it all the time. You're weak, you hurt yourself and everyone around you. They don't want your problems, so stop whining to them about it, you need to help yourself. Your friends have their own problems. Quit expecting so much out of people. Quit expecting so much out of yourself.

Terror

So about fifteen minutes ago I think I had a panic attack (I literally Googled "feeling of impending doom). Which was weird. Because all I was doing was taking a shower.

It was one of the scariest things I've ever experienced. There was a huge looming feeling of impending doom, nothing felt real, I was totally detached but swimming in fear, and I was pretty sure I was about to die. I never want to go through anything like that again.

This ever happen to anybody else?

Censorship

Who has the right to decide what you can and cannot be exposed to?

Many of you may have heard of Ellen Hopkins, the author of Tricks, Impulse, Crank, Burned, Identical, and others. Personally, I am a big fan of her books because they deal with real-life issues such as self-harm, teenage relationships, prostitution, suicide, drugs, etc.

Ellen has had her invitation to attend the Humble Teen Lit Festival (Humble is a suburb of Houston, TX) rescinded.

Why? What did she do to offend? She had previously been a speaker at two schools in that area, had she conducted herself in a way where she was deemed unfit to speak with the children again?

Her invitation was rescinded because of one librarian and a couple of parents. Out of hundreds of librarians and thousands of parents, a couple of narrow-minded people get to decide that a New York Times bestselling author can't come to their festival because they don't want their kids, their kids, reading her books?

These few people went to the superintendent and ask that Ellen be uninvited, and he agreed, even though he had never read her books.

What about the other kids whose parents said it was okay? What about those other kids who had been dying to meet their favorite author? What about those kids who's lives were changed thanks to one of her books, and wanted to thank her?

Censorship is a huge problem! We are lucky to live somewhere we can read anything we want, and when that starts to be taken away, we need to get angry.

If you want to e-mail the boneheaded super, his e-mail address is Guy.Sconzo@humble.k12.tx.us, though please refrain from cursing.

Keep your restrictions to yourself.

Today was the final day of summer vacation.

I'm not quite sure how to feel about this.

I've been so busy this summer, it doesn't feel like I had a vacation.

I need some Me-Time.

And a good book.

And a hammock.

I really want a hammock.

Score one for equality!

Proposition 8 has been temporarily overturned in the state of California. For those of you who don't know what this means, it means that gay marriage is no longer illegal there.

Now I know some people (a lot of people) are against gay marriage, but let me ask you this: why shouldn't homosexual marriage be considered equal to heterosexual marriage?
What defines a marriage?

Love? Check.
Two consenting adults? Check.
Commitment? Check.

Its the merging of two lives as one.

*Angry Christian storms into the room, pushes Nobody out of her chair, and takes over the computer.*

But it says in the Bible that it was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve! Its supposed to be between a man and a woman! God says so! - Angry Christian.

*N gets up and pushes AC out of the chair and ties them up on the floor. This is a written account of the dialog I had with the AC*

Dear Angry Christian,
Are Christians the only ones who get married? No? Then why should your definition of marriage bind the rest of the country to your ideals? There's a reason there is a separation of church and state specifically designated in the Constitution.
-Nobody

"But we're RIGHT." -AC

Dear AC,
Who says? You have freedom to believe what you want and the rest of the country has the freedom to believe what they want. I myself am Jewish (insert Angry Christian comment about how I'm going to burn in Hell here). The USA is a melting pot, where people of all beliefs coexist (not without disputes, but thats true of any society) and are free to pray to whomever or whatever they want, if at all.
-Nobody

"But gay marriages are just WRONG!" -AC

Dear AC,
Then don't get one.

Art Update

Okay, so I'm sitting in the worst class in the world right now, doing absolutely nothing for the rest of the year, so I figured I'd update on how my art project thing is going.

I finished the Poison Apple, which I re-named "I Don't Take Apples from Strangers", and then had an idea to do like a whole classic Disney series. I just finished yesterday "Never Trust a Bottle with a Vague Label", which is the 'Drink Me' bottle from Alice in Wonderland. I'll upload pictures soon-ish of each of them.

But now I'm stuck. What should I do next? I could do Cinderella's slipper ("Footwear is Best Made with Laces"), but I feel like it would need more to it thatn I can think of at the moment, so I don;t want to work on something yet if I don;t have a clear image in my head of how I want it to be at the end.

I could do Sleeping Beauty with a needle ("Always Wear a Thimble"), but I'm not sure if people would get it, plus I can't think of something to put on the piece to signify that its being offered to her by the witch (In "I Don't Take Apples from Strangers", I had above the apple 'Just a bite?' and I think that really brought it all together).

I could do Aladdin with the lamp (No name as of yet), and I think it would be cool because I'm planning on using red for the background, which will be new for me, but I really can't draw lamps and I have no idea what its missing, because it is definitely missing something in my mind.

Little Mermaid is always an option, except I don't know what pivotal object I could use in the piece. A fork maybe? I really don't want to do a seashell, its way too cliche. But the colors for that piece would be a nice mixture of pastels, different from the others.

Sleeping Beauty I could maybe do, and I'd use the rose, but I can't paint a rose. I suck at them. Maybe if I take a picture of one and cut it out....? But the background for that would be bold colors, like stained glass, and then muted with a thin layer of dark blue paint. Plus, I don't have words for that one either.

Then there's Fantasia, Pochahontas, Lion King, Pinnochio, Dumbo, Bambi, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, The Jungle Book, The Aristocats, Mulan, Tarzan, oy!!! There are so many it makes my head spin! As for this list, I either haven't thought about them much or don't know the movies well enough to think about them.
I need suggestions on the focal object of these movies, like I had with the first two I did, and words to put on them, or, heck, even names would be helpful!

So whaddaya say guys....
HELP????

Art

Don't you hate it when you have this perfect image of something you want to create in your mind, but then you realize you have no idea whatsoever how to go about creating it? I went to an arts festival yesterday in Atlanta while visiting family, and since then, I've had several ideas of pieces of art I'd love to create. I can see them so clearly in my mind's eye, I just don't know how to make them. So I've decided to take a week of summer vacation and just create. I'm gonna grab some modge podge, old magazines, acrylic paint, wood, newspapers, tissue paper, foil, pencils, pastels, photos, you name it! I'm excited. Now, all I need is the money to buy the stuff. -_-

Current Ideas:
Poison Apple
Picture frames that are decorated to fit the photo within
I'm Lying to You, Ann
Bubbles
School's Out
What Happened to Clearly Defined?

Anyone else have ideas they'd like to share?

What can one kid do to save her town?

They're building a concrete plant less than a mile from my school.

I'm pissed off.

The concrete is going to stink to high heaven, and the traffic to and from school will be so much worse than it already is. The skyline will no longer be unbroken mountains, but now marred with smokestacks, and the air quality is going to go from fresh and healthy to stale and polluted.

I'm really, really, really pissed off. The people of the city should have something to say about this, because it affects all of their lives.

Yes, it'll bring jobs to the city, but it will also drive away potential home-buyers. SO many people moved here because of the fresh mountain air and the beautiful view. Now what? Say goodbye to spring showers and hello to acid rain. Goodbye open roads, hello six-o-clock traffic. Bye-bye cleansing breeze, hello asthma-inducing smog.

What can I do though? What can one kid do to save her town? There's a protest at the school on Wednesday, but I don't see how that will change anything.

I want this to stop, because I'm afraid that if it doesn't, I won't be able to want to live here anymore.

Parties

I really wish parties were fun. Every time I go to one, on my way there I'm thinking "Oh, this is going to be awesome!" and then I come to my senses. I walk in the door and the lights are so low you can barely see the kid in front of you. Rap music is blaring so loud you wonder why your ears haven't run away yet. And then you notice the middle of the room, where people are essentially having sex on the dance floor.

Wooh. Fun.

I long for the decades past when parties meant masquerades and balls, or swing dancing until your legs collapsed from exhaustion, or heck just a few friends laughing and having a good time! But then there are these........"parties" (I use that word very loosely).

Now, even if you get away from the dark room that smells like pot, the dance floor that could probably count as foreplay, and the music screaming at you until you have a headache, there is still the problem of the people. The sheer quantity of bodies packed into one area for a "party" is spectacular. You wonder how people do it. And its almost impossible to insert yourself into a conversation without being extremely awkward. You feel like an outcast. Aren't parties supposed to be fun?

So, sane people of the world, deep people of the world, fed up people of the world, revolt! Start throwing actual parties! Murder-mysteries, masquerades, luaus, think about it! We need to change the paradigm that so many people have in this day and age of parties. We will NOT stand by and watch our fun go down with "shawty".

Ethical Choices

I have this teacher who is probably the coolest below 40 year old adult in the world. Well, we took our exam yesterday so now we have a month of doing nothing in his class. So one of my friends was playing around on his computer, and came across a blog. He writes it.

Now I think it would be pretty neat to keep up with my teacher's life, considering he's the coolest below 40 year old adult in the world, but I'm not going to.

Wanna know why?

I don't think he'd want us to be reading it. There's a certain line between teacher to student and friend to friend. Yes, I think our teacher is awesome. Yes, he loves our class. But I think reading that blog would cross that fine line, and completely break down what it is important for a teacher to have in a relationship with his students.

Yes, he's an awesome teacher. No, I will not read his blog.

Some people just don't get that

You can stop liking a person and still have your life changed by them. Some people just don't get that.

Like, I went to a sleepaway camp for 7 years, and met someone who changed my life. Yes, at the time I really liked him. A LOT. But when all was said and done, and I got over the drama and stopped liking him that way, he still had changed my life. Because of my relationship (no, not a relationship relationship, like crush relationship to someone who doesn't know you relationship. grow up people) with him, I began to write. I began to act. Those two things are some of the most important things in my life right now, and I never would have gotten into them if my experience with him hadn't changed my life.

So I respect him still, and I want to be friends. But that doesn't change the fact that he influenced me a lot, and I still look up to him because of it.

Some people just don't get that.

Time paradox, solved!

I figured out the paradox of time travel wiping out whatever it is you came back to fix in the first place.

Self that goes back in time: Bob
Self that Bob warns of something: Fred
Self that Fred goes back in time and consequently warns: George

So its really simple actually. All you have to do is get Bob to go back in time and warn Fred about whatever it is you came to warn him about and tell Fred to go back in time on a specific date in the future to warn George.

See? Even when Bob disappears after warning Fred, Fred will still warn George no matter what happens because part of the warning was to go back in time to warn George about whatever it is that needs fixing, even if its in a future that is now perfectly fine.

Make sense?

Questions

Why is it that certain boys give you a rush when you talk to them? Why is it when they tell you you're gorgeous, you feel so lucky? Why is it always those boys that end up convinced you're an idiot? A creeping weirdo? Why do they log off the second you try to talk to them? Why are these boys the one who hurt you in the most petty yet painful ways? ~~~~~~~~~ Why is it that we put so much value into other people's opinions? Why do they matter more than our own? Why do we crave approval? Why do words have so much power? Why is it that when those words are withheld, that's when they hurt you the most?~~~~~~~~~ Why do we judge other people before we get to know them, before we've had an actual conversation with them? Why do we assume things about others, be they good or bad, without having spoken to them before? Why do we judge so many by these assumptions?~~~~~~~~Why is it okay for one person to hurt, but not another? Why do we crave some people's advice, but those who are most willing to help, their advice means nothing? Why do we allow others to hurt while we glance through a glass window, ogling at their pain?~~~~~~~~~ Why do sad movies make us feel emotion? Why does every mistake cut like broken glass? Why do I bother asking at all?

Stuck on a Limb Here

Have you ever gone out on a limb, and had it break under you, dropping you two stories and landing you in the hospital?

Whats the point in taking chances if you only ever get hurt? I mean, sure there's that slim chance that it'll work out, but I mean really, why bother?

Thats all that ever seems to happen to my friends and I.

Like, someone seems cool to you, so you decide to try and become friends. But then you act like a fool, and they decide they don't like you.

Thats how it always goes, and I end up hating myself for being myself because some other person may or may not like the way I phrase my sentences.

Why do we care so much about what people think? Is it because we want to have a bond with another human, to be able to say "I'm accepted"? Or is it because we can't deal with that false idea being shattered before our eyes.

In the perfect society, nobody would care about you being weird, they wouldn't care how you acted different, they would like you for who the hell you are. But this isn't a perfect society. People judge others by a handful of premeditated words designed to make you seem acceptable by society's standards.

Going out on a limb will break you.

How to Make Other People's Lives Better: A To-Do List

·         Give an actual response to “How are you?”
·         Let someone who is really anxious to speak put their two cents in before you speak.
·         Make someone laugh who need sit.
·         Help make someone part of the conversation who is standing there kind of awkwardly.
·         Help someone find an answer to their problem.
·         Expect something great out of everyone.
·         Wave a debt someone owes you; a coffee really doesn’t cost that much.
·         Go talk to someone who is standing by themselves at a party.
·         Remember as many names as you can, and the good things they entail.
·         Treat someone who is genuinely good as if they were a celebrity.
·         Use fun words in daily conversation; who doesn’t love to say Guadalajara?
·         Listen.
·         Take the spotlight off of someone who really doesn’t want it on them.
·         Ask an elderly person to tell you about their lives.
·         Be in a good mood.
·         Encouragement.
·         Give credit where credit is due.
·         Give the truth when it is asked and when it is right; i.e. sales-pitch for your old TV that sometimes fritzes.
·         Write letters and notes.
·         True “thank you”’s.
·         Know before judging.
·         Introduce two people to each other who would make great friends.
·         Defend someone who isn’t there to defend themselves.
·         Give compliments often and genuinely.
·         Second chances for those who deserve them.
·         Something someone is proud of? Ask them if they could make one/do it/ explain it for you.
·         Care when you ask “How are you?”
·         Recognition of a job well done.
·         Someone do something good? Let them know, and tell other people too.
·         Smile.

Party Pooped

Wanna know what the hardest part about planning a party is?

Figuring out who to invite.

I mean, you know how you have different sets of friends, and certain friends who if you invite them you have to invite other friends, and some people who you don't know if they are party-invite worthy yet but you think they might be your party-invite worthy friends, and then there are the loners who never have fun at parties so why should I invite them in the first place, the people who don't get along with some of the other people you may or may not be inviting, the people who wouldn't really click with all the other people there and might feel awkward, the people who know ABSOLUTELY NOBODY ELSE and would cling to you the whole time, the people who show up to parties whether you invite them or not, the people who would get offended if you didn't invite, the people who you don't want to invite but since you're inviting everyone else in that group you have to invite them too, and your friends.

I tell ya, it's nuts.

Idiots

Have you heard about Constance?
The wouldn't let her take her girlfriend to prom, and when that was deemed illegal, they cancelled the prom.
THEN the parents decided to make their own prom, which was mysteriously cancelled a few days before and replaced by another event at a country club.
Constance was invited to the country club event, along with five other kids. The rest of the school went to the prom that the parents had planned.

People are IDIOTS.

Why is it so bad to have a lesbian couple at a prom? SERIOUSLY! And what's worse, you're treating her and her girlfriend as if they have some horrible contagious disease. They're kids, no different from you, they have feelings, and for God's sake, they just want to go to freaking prom!

But you know what, if people are going to be that close-minded about others expressing who they are, who needs their stupid prom anyway.

Rant

To steal a rant idea from  one of my favorite books, Big Fat Manifesto, I'd like to talk about lead roles and big girls.

Why can't Juliet to be plus-sized? Why can't Roxy be big? Why must Belle be the size of a twig?

Because people are idiots, that's why.

Now, I'm not saying the director aren't good people or anything, no, not at all. But why do you always cast the big girl as either the villain or the mom? Most of the big girls I know have insanely amazing voices, they can really belt.

Don't get me wrong here, it's fun playing the villain and mom, but I WANT TO BE A LEAD ROLE FOR ONCE! And not just in Hairspray (though that's a great musical).

Are we not allowed to fall in love? Does it just not happen?

If you said yes to that, I will come through the computer and go Tybalt on your ass (current role, just got back from rehearsal, it's on my mind, so sue me.)

YES a big girl can be the object of Romeo's affection! WHY IS THIS SO HARD FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND?

Oh, that's right. Society decided to create the paradigm for female lead roles as girls who wear a size negative one, and that's after they've had a big meal.

I've seen a director cast a mediocre girl in a lead role over a fantastic person for the part, and I'm almost 100% positive that it was because the girl who got it was a stick and the girl who didn't eats three meals a day.

God, people annoy me.

Wow! A double-post! Aren't you lucky -_-

If you don't think you can do something, how the crap do you expect other people to believe you can?

Like, take acting for example.

If you're playing Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, and you don't think you can do the part, that you're not believable you won't be believable. Period.

Honestly, if you don't believe in yourself, you're not getting anywhere in this world. Granted, you might not get anywhere anyway, but you get the gist of it.

Promises, promises

Your word is the most precious and fragile thing that you have to give to someone.
So make sure it's good.
Keep your promises.
Even if they weren't official promises, if you say you're going to do something, do it.
Like even something as simple as "I'll text you tomorrow, okay?" is important.
Someone may be counting on you.

Masks

We all wear masks.

It's just a fact of life; we act differently around different people, and we can't even be honest with ourselves most of the time.

I believe that life is a masquerade, and we are all just guests. The lucky ones are the jesters, the ones who can take off their masks. They get laughed at, but they show who they truly are.

I want the courage to become a jester.

Chivalry

Well, what do you think folks, is chivalry dead? If it's not, should it be dead?

Chivalry is rooted in sexism, no matter what way you look at it; the rules came from a time where men were considered better than women and men had to do everything for them.

But nowadays, when men and women are treated by and large as equals, is a man holding a door open for a woman considered chivalrous or sexist?

Personally, I would love for a guy to hold the door open for me or open my car door, but ordering my meal for me would piss me off.

What are your views on chivalry? Leave a comment or two, let me know what you think- I want this blog to be as much me talking to you as you talking to me and to each other.

Zombies and Q

Don't you hate it when you think you buried something, then it rises from the grave to eat your flesh? Um, wait, that's zombies. I think I meant "rises from the grave to bother you again." Yup, that's the one.

Like Q. I had forgotten alllll about Q. And then Q decided to remember me. Joy-oh-joy.

Q was a human (not a zombie) I used to like and who I had embarrassed myself in front of irreparably. That was a few years ago, and I figured Q had forgotten all about me, or if he remembered who I was, brushed the memory off like a shower of dandruff.

Apparently not.

See, I had convinced myself Q hated me and was ridiculously annoyed by me, so I decided to forget Q. Apparently Q wants to see me this weekend. Wow, I'm confused.

What do you think? Can friendships (or potential ones) be ruined (or not started) because of what people think the other person thinks of them? Why are what you think the other person thinks, and what they actually think sometimes so drastically different? Leave your answer in the comments (which are working again).

Spring Awakening

Spring Awakening and the issues it discusses.
I love this musical for three reasons.
1) The music
2) The intensity of the emotion
3) The topics it brings up.

Now, number three might seem a bit odd. But it's important. Spring Awakening deals with issues like abuse, sex, and suicide. All set in late 19th century Germany. I think it's important to address issues like these, and what better way to do so than through a medium people can be moved by?

This rock musical is phenomenal and emotional and I can't really say much else right now, because I have to go shower xD

As the Italians say, "Art is long; Life is short."

Family

You either love 'em or you can't stand them.

Personally, I think family is one of the most important things in the world. Why do I think this?
Well, first off, you share a common history with them (to go ahead and set things straight, I'm talking about extended family as well.) You all come from the same place, each new member adding a little more flair to the history.

You need people who you can count on, who will be behind you no matter what. My cousin is my best friend, for instance. I know she would support anything I do (well, except maybe murder, but I don't even think family could support that xD) as I would for her.

But here's a nice question: When do you draw the line? When is your family too much? If they go to jail, do you still support them? If they convert to a different religion, do you still support them? If they turn out to be gay, do you still support them?

Some people would say no.

Let me know what your take on all of this is, leave a comment and tell me.

P.S. Sorry the comments weren't working earlier, it should be fixed now.
P.P.S. Also leave a comment with ideas for me to talk about, I want to know what you want to hear.

Imagination

I would give my right pinky toe to have the imagination Lewis Carroll had.

Can you imagine a world all your own, with creatures and words no one has ever thought of before? I wish i could. I think I'm going to try.

Lewis Carroll is my favorite poet, because he wrote "The Jabberwocky", a poem I have been obsessed with since I was a little kid. In 4th grade I made my dad teach it to me, and now I can only recite it in a British accent because that's how he taught it to me, and frankly, I think that's the best way to say it.

P.S. Tim Burton is a genius. I  would give my left pinky toe to have his imagination.

Poetry Post #1: Ruins

She looks on mournfully

as her parents
friends
teachers
family
slip away

A bystander in the game of life.
A piece not yet moved,
a future undecided.

Four fingers and a thumb
curl into a fist,
and,
hard and fast,
collide with a window
shattering the view
of her world.

Breathe, she tells herself.
It's over.
And she leaves it
all in
ruins.

Cars and Brain Soup

Even though you know something is true, you should still talk about it.

X, this explanation is for you.

I was on the phone with X the other day, and I was totally freaking out. I was freaking out because I was afraid that I was going to do something ridiculously stupid and hurtful. X was shopping for a car in the Iwonna.

Now, X and I are really good friends, and so I was expecting him to help me.

"Have you done anything?"
"Well, no."
"I knew you wouldn't. What car do you think I should get?"

Now, I've talked to X again recently, and he said that he was worried about me doing the stupid thing all night.
I believe him.

I also believe, however, that even if you know someone won't do something, you need to talk to them about it. Because they don't usually know.

I didn't know.

Friends are supposed to be there for you, so you can talk to them, and they can help you put the soup that used to be your brain back into your head.

What a way to end a post. Brain soup.

Pretty

"I'm not saying that you are "unattractive" by any stretch of the imagination."

Well now. That's an interesting way of putting something.
First of all, I would like to make it clear that I am not attacking the person who wrote this, he happens to be a very close friend who was trying to make me feel better.

No, I'm not too happy with his choice of words.

Have the word "pretty" and all its synonyms suddenly been ostracized from the English language? I mean, it's not difficult to say "Dude, that's pretty awesome!" and "You're totally right!" so why not be able to take two of those words and put them together. "Dude totally"? No. "That's right"? Try again. "Totally awesome"? Really now people?

Try "You're pretty". It's two words that can have an insane impact on a girl, and it's not at all hard to say!

I mean, "I'm not saying that you are "unattractive" by any stretch of the imagination." is quite a mouthful.

Giving someone a compliment can make their whole day. Trust me, I know. However, doing your best not to give a compliment without hurting someone's feelings can have a suckish effect.

Yes. Suckish is an adjective.

To put it simply folks, if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

Welcome!

Hi there! You've found a way to my blog! Good for you =) Now, you don't know me, I don't know you, let's keep it that way, shall we? However, if you really want a name for me, just call me Nobody (5 points if you can tell me what Greek myth that's a play off of). Because that's what I am, a teenage Nobody. As for some background, that will come in time (if I'm feeling generous). All you need to know is that I'll be using this as a way to voice my opinion, rants, and occasional piece of literature in this big world we call the internet, and hope that maybe some other teenage Nobodies will listen.
