Rant
To steal a rant idea from one of my favorite books, Big Fat Manifesto, I'd like to talk about lead roles and big girls.
Why can't Juliet to be plus-sized? Why can't Roxy be big? Why must Belle be the size of a twig?
Because people are idiots, that's why.
Now, I'm not saying the director aren't good people or anything, no, not at all. But why do you always cast the big girl as either the villain or the mom? Most of the big girls I know have insanely amazing voices, they can really belt.
Don't get me wrong here, it's fun playing the villain and mom, but I WANT TO BE A LEAD ROLE FOR ONCE! And not just in Hairspray (though that's a great musical).
Are we not allowed to fall in love? Does it just not happen?
If you said yes to that, I will come through the computer and go Tybalt on your ass (current role, just got back from rehearsal, it's on my mind, so sue me.)
YES a big girl can be the object of Romeo's affection! WHY IS THIS SO HARD FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND?
Oh, that's right. Society decided to create the paradigm for female lead roles as girls who wear a size negative one, and that's after they've had a big meal.
I've seen a director cast a mediocre girl in a lead role over a fantastic person for the part, and I'm almost 100% positive that it was because the girl who got it was a stick and the girl who didn't eats three meals a day.
God, people annoy me.

It's hard for tall girls to be lead roles too, I've noticed (being tall). I'm always the older lady. Oh, and one time I WANTED the mom role and didn't get it because I'm tall and thin. The girl who got it was bigger.
It's not fair, it really isn't. Type casting is the bane of my existence. As a future drama teacher(hopefully) and there for a future director, I hope I can remember this and cast people based on talent and not on looks.

It's the same with t.v and music and such.
Whens the last time you saw a girl who is above a size 4 on a t.v show (that isn't about weight loss)? Whens the last time the big girl with the bigger voice won American Idol? It's not just girls, guys too. Whens the last time you saw a poster of a shirtless average Joe when you have gone into a clothing store? Whens the last time Romeo wasn't the pretty-boy jock type? The world is getting pretty shallow, it's revolting.
Personally, I am not overweight, but that's not to say I haven't eaten a fair amount of ice cream in my day. When I see really tiny stick figure girls it makes me wanna give them some spare change to buy a sandwich. Likewise, when I see a really big muscle-y dude, I want to hurl. What society finds "attractive" these days is so gross.

this will NEVER change.
you have to alter your body to fit the role.
its just about how bad you want it.
im SICK to DEATH of getting mother roles, so ive been on a diet.
i dont care what it takes, i refuse to be the mother for the rest of my life.
