Pretty
"I'm not saying that you are "unattractive" by any stretch of the imagination."
Well now. That's an interesting way of putting something.
First of all, I would like to make it clear that I am not attacking the person who wrote this, he happens to be a very close friend who was trying to make me feel better.
No, I'm not too happy with his choice of words.
Have the word "pretty" and all its synonyms suddenly been ostracized from the English language? I mean, it's not difficult to say "Dude, that's pretty awesome!" and "You're totally right!" so why not be able to take two of those words and put them together. "Dude totally"? No. "That's right"? Try again. "Totally awesome"? Really now people?
Try "You're pretty". It's two words that can have an insane impact on a girl, and it's not at all hard to say!
I mean, "I'm not saying that you are "unattractive" by any stretch of the imagination." is quite a mouthful.
Giving someone a compliment can make their whole day. Trust me, I know. However, doing your best not to give a compliment without hurting someone's feelings can have a suckish effect.
Yes. Suckish is an adjective.
To put it simply folks, if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

I totally agree with you.
Being complimented can totally make my day. I love it when anyone tells me I look nice especially if I'm having a bad day. Or if someone likes my clothes even.
I've learned to compliment myself, though, so I don't always have to rely on others for affirmation. I find something I like about myself, my looks, my personality, my outfit, whatever, and stick by my self compliment. It does wonders for self-esteem. I know that sounds self-centered, but it works.
